About Fostering SuperStars
My name is Helen Ramaglia Payne, and I am a former foster child who aged out of foster care at age 18 with absolutely nothing. Typically, foster children age out of care with $250.00 and wish for a successful life. Seriously, at age 18 (21 in some states), your parents, the Government of the United States of America, will at some point come to you and say:
"Congratulations. You're an adult today!
Here's $250 to get you started.
Good luck - and by the way, don't forget to succeed."
I tried incredibly hard for many years to succeed, as instructed! But failure after failure left me discouraged, depressed, alone, unheard, and invisible.
I kept asking myself, how am I supposed to succeed when I have no idea what success looks like? I thought many of my decisions were good decisions, but the condition of my life assured me that wasn't the case.
I spent years researching, and what I found was very disturbing. I realized that everything I had learned as a child was based on a distorted sense of normal. I finally realized that changing my predefined life trajectory would mean learning life all over again—but this time, with the assistance of one amazing therapist. Much-needed focused therapy that isn't typically provided by foster care.
So ... all I needed to do was relearn everything that defined my entire life.
OUR MISSION
Fostering SuperStars is a non-profit organization dedicated to celebrating the life, dreams, and birthday wishes of children who wouldn't otherwise be celebrated.
Ramaglia boys - foster adopted 6/2010
Many years later, in June of 2008, two adorable foster boys stepped through my front door and into my heart. Advocating for the needs of my two wonderful little boys was difficult and often left me feeling confused and exhausted. The foster care system didn’t offer much assistance, being overwhelmed, understaffed, and short on funds to offer much more than the government-provided basics.
While unpacking their 4 black garbage bags of ratty belongings, I was reminded of my own journey into the foster care system. It took me back to the day when two strangers knocked on my door, tossed 2 black garbage bags at me, and said I had 5 minutes to stuff them with as much as I could.
Decades later, I realized it was still the same broken system I lived in.
At that moment, I knew I found my purpose - Fostering SuperStars.
Many of our foster children lack basic skills and tools to navigate life compared to their peers, which is an extraordinary situation in of itself. Equipping children with the necessary tools for life achievement is undoubtedly the most essential need any child has. Driver's licenses, college degrees, and birthday celebrations are just a few of the many experiences children in care deserve.
Fostering SuperStars is a group of like-minded individuals committed to changing the world for children living in foster care. We are advocates, foster alumni, volunteers, and supporters, all with one goal in mind:

No Trash Bags For Kids
In Foster Care
Over 700 children enter the foster care system each day, some temporarily for many, long term. Most are given two trash bags to carry their belongings. These children have been neglected and often feel like they don’t matter.
At Fostering SuperStars we, we know these children deserve better than that. To help foster kids have more positive experiences, we have volunteers like you decorate, stuff, and donate Hope Totes all over the United States. Together, we can work to eliminate trash bags from foster care.
